Matthew Hammonds
Kansas City, Mo.

Calvary University has announced the addition of a men's varsity reserve basketball team set to begin competition in the 2026-2027 academic year. The new program represents strategic expansion of the university's athletic offerings while providing additional development opportunities for student athletes.

The varsity reserve team will be led by former Calvary alumnus Matthew Hammonds, who brings both familiarity with the institution and a strong passion for player development. Hammonds' appointment reflects the university's commitment to maintaining continuity within its athletic culture while investing in emerging leadership.

University officials noted that the addition of the reserve team will serve multiple purposes. Primarily, it will create a structured environment for athletes to refine their skills, gain competitive experience, and prepare for advancement to the varsity level. The program is also expected to strengthen roster depth and enhance overall program sustainability.

Recruitment efforts for the inaugural roster are expected to begin in the coming months, with the team preparing for its first full season of competition in fall 2026.

The launch of the varsity reserve team underscores Calvary University's ongoing commitment to athletic and academic excellence, while fostering a supportive environment for the next generation of student athletes.
