Dr. Alexander Granados, president of Calvary University, along with interim athletic director Tressa Barnes, are pleased to announce that Winston Lewis has been hired as the new Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Calvary University. The former Huntingdon College (AL) All-American and semi-pro soccer player has joined Calvary’s athletic coaching staff this summer. Lewis currently owns and operates a business for Technical and Tactical Soccer Training, a training program based in the Kansas City area for individual, small group, and team training.
“We are excited to welcome Winston Lewis as our new head soccer coach for the Warriors,” said Calvary University athletic director Tressa Barnes. “Coach Lewis understands and is excited about Calvary University and the Christ-centered approach we have with all our athletic teams. We believe he will carry on these Calvary values with great distinction and enhance the culture of excellence within our athletic program.”
Coach Lewis was born and raised in the Caribbean island republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Though soccer is part of the country’s culture, organized youth clubs were not part of his childhood, so he honed and developed his skills by “playing up” in the adult leagues in his hometown. Through hard work and dedication, Winston proceeded to play in the local semi-pro and professional leagues, eventually earning a college scholarship to then NAIA Huntingdon College (AL) where he secured All-American accolades throughout his two year college career. After moving to New Orleans, he played semi-professionally in both the Latino “Islano” leagues and the South-Central Regional Men’s league.
“Owning a training program for soccer in the Kansas City area definitely gives him an edge into our local soccer community that we haven’t previously had,” said CU athletic director Tressa Barnes. “He brings a wealth of knowledge, a love for Christ, and a strong work ethic and ownership that will elevate our program.”
Lewis got into coaching after college in middle and high school programs in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, earning city and district titles and going deep into playoff runs in Louisiana. As a youth club coach, his teams have earned state championships and runner-up honors throughout the years. “After devoting over 25 years to coaching club soccer, my passion is to now channel my knowledge and experience to the educational and developmental side of the sport, to both individual players and organizations alike,” said Coach Lewis. Winston holds a B.S. in Sport Management, as well as a United States Soccer Federation “A” license, and USSF National Youth License.
Coach Lewis is married to his wife Mandy, and they have beautiful twins, Aezienne Jørdson (3) and Aezlynn Zorjette (3). They currently live in Overland Park, Kansas.
“We are excited to introduce Winston Lewis as our new head men’s soccer coach. During my conversations with him, I was impressed by his leadership skills, coaching philosophy, and level of commitment to the student-athletes. I have no doubt Winston will be an excellent fit for our athletic department and our soccer program will thrive under his direction,” said Matt Sanders, Calvary’s associate athletic director. “We are excited to see how he will help Calvary Athletics in our mission to develop and graduate true crown chasers.”
Welcome to Calvary soccer, Winston!
